A new study has found that antibiotic use can lead to antibiotic resistance in bacteria. The research by Dr. R. D. K. Kondak of the Department of Public Health, University of Liverpool, and colleagues examined the antibiotic resistance patterns in the UK and Germany and their effect on antibiotic prescribing.

The study, published in theArchives of Infectious Diseasespublished online by the online journalAntimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, found that nearly 70% of infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria were resistant to the antibiotic doxycycline, and that 30% of those caused by gram-negative bacteria were resistant to amoxicillin. The research was based on data from the UK, Germany, and France and was presented at the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.

The researchers were able to obtain antibiotic resistance data from 500 UK hospitals, 500 German laboratories, and 500 German patients, which were then used for analysis.

The research team assessed the results of the study using two types of statistical tests: logistic regression analysis and non-parametric analysis. Logistic regression analysis was used to measure the odds of resistance against the antibiotic amoxicillin from the antibiotic doxycycline. Non-parametric analysis was used to test the association between antibiotic resistance and the antimicrobial use.

In the current analysis, antibiotic resistance patterns of the antibiotic doxycycline were similar between patients who were prescribed the antibiotic and those who did not. However, the researchers found that patients who were prescribed the antibiotic were at higher risk of developing resistance against amoxicillin.

The researchers found that patients who were prescribed doxycycline were at higher risk of developing antibiotic resistance, particularly the resistance to amoxicillin.

The authors concluded that the study’s findings were “a reminder of the need to take action to tackle the rising antibiotic resistance issue” and that “the need to be vigilant in addressing the issue”.
